Next to Normal Opens Tonight!

The Woodlawn Theatre’s main stage has been completely transformed to make way for a truly monu-’mental’ production the Pulitzer Board calls “a powerful rock musical”.

Directed by Artistic Director, Greg Hinojosa, ‘Next to Normal‘ features a ground-breaking, electrifying pop-rock score that carries the audience through the gambit of emotions and focuses on a significant topic – the struggle to overcome mental health challenges. Starring Beth Erwin as Diana Goodman (a bi-polar schizophrenic mother), Josh Harris as Dan Goodman (her long-suffering husband), and featuring Conley Wehner (Natalie), Matthew Lieber (Gabe), Ben Carlee (Henry), and Robby Vance (Dr. Madden/Dr. Fine), the show explores how one suburban family copes with crisis, and paints an authentic and thought provoking picture of an important situation in an entirely new and fresh way.

In keeping with our mission statement, Woodlawn Theatre has partnered with the San Antonio State Hospital (SASH) and the National Alliance on Mental Illness – San Antonio (NAMI-SAT), two local organizations dedicated to educating the public about mental health concerns, and to reach out to new families and individuals struggling with mental illness. In addition to hosting special talk-back sessions with Clinical Psychiatrists and volunteering man hours at SASH, the Woodlawn Theatre is sponsoring a fundraising event in which $1 from every ticket sold throughout opening weekend will be donated to NAMI-SAT.

Opening June 29, the show will run through July 29 with performances Friday & Saturday at 7:30PM, with Sunday matinees at 3:00PM. ‘Next to Normal’ is not only a stellar show with an all-star cast, it carries with it a truly powerful message: “the price of love is loss, but still we pay, we love anyway”!
